3BUGS Fringe Theatre is dedicated to the creation and support of off-the-wall, alternative and experimental student theatre. Founded in 2003, 3BUGS Fringe Theatre Society was the third drama society created at the University of Birmingham with the intention of engaging students with fringe-style theatre. Since then, many students across all year groups and academic subjects have come together to propose, devise and perform their own fringe shows within the Guild of Students as well as taking one production each year to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Not even the COVID-19 pandemic could get in the way of 3BUGS’ determination to engage more and more people in the creation of fringe theatre. This year we have produced two online shows so far, ‘Bright/Wild’ by Hayley Rae and a live devised project ‘Your Call’, as well as running workshops, fundraisers, socials and planning the BUFF.
Anyone can join us, whatever subject you study and whatever experience you have. Anyone can propose a play to direct and the committee will support you all the way. We pride ourselves on being as inclusive as possible, in keeping with the spirit of the fringe.

The Birmingham University Fringe Festival is our way of bringing a virtual Fringe Festival to UoB students and staff. It’s a chance to share our love for fringe theatre by making it accessible to everyone - the entire festival will be free to all. Our hope is to bring together many different forms of art and theatre from the wide range of societies across UoB as well as bringing in the work from DTA staff members. From theatre to music to dance to stand-up comedy, the BUFF will be a collaborative virtual showcase of the incredible work created during a difficult time for people in the arts everywhere. We will also be hosting some exciting workshops and Q&As with guest speakers, practitioners and companies.
The BUFF isn’t entirely new. 3BUGS used to host the festival once every year, but it hasn’t happened in recent years. BUT for this year, the BUFF is back! COVID-19 restrictions have sadly led to the cancellation and postponement of many loved society events across the year and we’ve all had to adapt to online platforms, but we don’t want this to prevent our ability to share theatre. By putting the festival online, the aim of the BUFF is to enable as many people to get involved with Fringe as possible. This project is student-led and entirely free to take part in, so please consider donating to 3BUGS to support us and ensure we can continue to create and share fringe theatre in the future.
We can’t wait to see all the fantastic work you’ve created this year so if you want to get involved, visit the APPLY page or feel free to contact us if you have any questions or require support - details can be found under CONTACT US.
We can’t wait for you to join us from 11th-25th June 2021 for the first ever virtual BUFF! Bugs Love!
